    Over the past four years, Bossa has been engaged in a project titled Hidden Treasures, which will debut at our New York gallery in November, one week after the Salon. This initiative aims to highlight companies that were instrumental in the development of modern design in Brazil but have since been largely forgotten by the contemporary scene.


    During our research, we mapped furniture and decor stores in São Paulo and uncovered an intriguing partnership between L'Atelier, Jorge Zalszupin's brand, and Galeria Sistina, founded by Arturo and Enrica Profili. Sharing the same space—L'Atelier on the ground floor and Galeria Sistina on the mezzanine—located in the Conjunto Nacional, designed by architect David Libeskind, this venue became a meeting point for art collectors, architects, and other prominent figures, illustrating the rich intersection of design and art in 1950s and 1960s São Paulo.


    Our selection for Salon 2024 offers an immersion into the vibrant world of modern art and design that flourished in São Paulo between the late 1950s and early 1960s. We have curated Brazilian art and furniture with deep cultural significance, featuring two extraordinary masterpieces: a credenza that belonged to Jorge Zalszupin himself and a custom desk designed by Franco Albini, commissioned by Enrica and Arturo Profili, along other pieces by L'Atelier . Our booth pays homage to this rich history, deeply connected to the legacy of São Paulo and the evolution of Brazilian design.

    Born in June 1922 in Warsaw, Poland, Jorge Zalszupin emerged as a seminal figure in Brazilian design after emigrating to São Paulo in 1949. A multidisciplinary talent, he distinguished himself as an architect, industrial designer, and entrepreneur, embodying the spirit of innovation that defined the post-war era.

    In 1959, Zalszupin founded L’Atelier, focusing on residential furniture that combined meticulous craftsmanship with avant-garde materials. His early designs showcased rich materials like leather, marble, and rosewood, emphasizing handmade joinery and exquisite detailing. Zalszupin actively sought aesthetic freedom, pushing the limits of technology to introduce unprecedented production techniques in Brazil. He revolutionized furniture design through the use of molded laminated rosewood, enabling graceful curves without lengthy manual processes.

     

    This innovation produced iconic pieces such as the Presidencial Sofa and Armchairs, Petalas Coffee Table, and Brasiliana Sofa and Armchairs. His masterful use of marquetry, known as “taqueamento,” involved gluing together various rosewood veneers, reducing waste while enhancing the visual richness of his work, exemplified in the iconic Guanabara tables. Zalszupin’s legacy is marked by his ability to blend creativity with functionality, resulting in pieces that resonate with Brazil’s cultural identity. His work reflects the boldness of the 1960s design movement and solidifies his status as a pivotal figure in modern Brazilian design.

    For the past four years, the Bossa team has devoted itself to the Hidden Treasures project, debuting at our New York gallery on November 21. This initiative aims to shed light on companies pivotal to the development and proliferation of modern design in Brazil during the 1960s—a legacy that, while often overlooked, remains both bold and enduring.

    Through our research, we mapped significant furniture and decor establishments in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, leading to a notable discovery: the collaboration between L’Atelier, Jorge Zalszupin’s renowned brand, and Galeria Sistina, founded by Arturo and Enrica Profili. Sharing an iconic space within Conjunto Nacional — a landmark designed by architect David Libeskind — L’Atelier occupied the ground floor while Galeria Sistina was situated in the mezzanine. This venue became a cultural crossroads for art collectors, architects, and prominent figures, exemplifying the rich dialogue between design and art that characterized São Paulo’s cultural landscape in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

    Jorge Zalszupin (1922-2020) left an enduring mark on Brazilian design, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s with his work through L'atelier. Among his most iconic creations are the Presidential Armchairs and the Presidential Sofa, both designed in 1959. These pieces are crafted from molded rosewood laminated wood, offering a light, organic structure. The wide armchairs provide a throne-like comfort, complemented by voluminous cushions.

     

    Zalszupin also designed a series of modulated units in the 1960s, allowing for customized furniture configurations. This particular piece remained in the designer's possession for over four decades in his personal residence. It features a variety of rosewood tones, covered with rectangular pieces of marquetry wood, enabling the creation of unique furniture pieces by adjusting the modular elements.

    In 2023, we acquired a piece initially thought to be designed by Sérgio Rodrigues, though no documentation confirmed this. Later research on Zanine Caldas revealed that the "Stage Chair" was actually designed by João Filgueiras Lima, known as Lelé, closely tied to the construction of Brasília. This discovery, supported by stunning archival photographs, allowed us to correctly attribute the chair, which had not been previously exhibited.

     

    Our collection also includes a unique desk with Franco Albini’s iconic brass and jacaranda wood handles, featuring spacious map drawers and a black vitral leather top. Originally part of Arturo and Enrica Profili’s collection, owners of the Galeria Sistina in São Paulo, this desk was repainted by previous owners and comes with documentation from the Fondazione Franco Albini.

    The Sesc Stool is structured with only four thick rectangular blocks of plywood pine, different from the traditional thin layers of laminated wood or plywood. The material had been developed by the engineer Vinicio Walter Callia (1923–1994) as a construction material to be used in architectural structures. The stools were manufactured by SESC carpenters using plywood produced by Laminarco, Callia’s company. The pieces are built in a simplified manner that resembles crates, with a single decorative detail: a cutout in a "U" shape on the backrest. The importance of the pieces lay on the revolutionary ideas of Lina bo Bardi on architecture and brazilian culture.

    Dominici Iluminação Moderna, founded by Enrico Furio Dominici in 1934, began as a lighting store in Bologna, Italy, before he relocated to Brazil amidst wartime disruptions. Dominici introduced captivating Italian lighting designs to Brazilian audiences, leading to the establishment of stores in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Transitioning from reliance on Italian imports, Dominici quickly rose to prominence by establishing a local lighting factory, producing exclusive pieces for various industries. By the 1970s, Studio Dominici not only manufactured products but also reintroduced European design to Brazil, solidifying its position as a leading authority in Brazilian lighting design, revered by architects, designers, and connoisseurs alike. This model is a rare ceiling lamp designed and produced by Dominici.

     

    Other amazing lights are part of our collection and some were selected to be on display at the Salon. Their authorship is still in research.

    The latest addition to the Morfa collection, the Morfa n.10, serves as either a dining table or an entrance table, making it a versatile statement piece. Solidly cast in bronze, this table departs from the lighter glass elements of previous Morfa designs, emphasizing a sense of heaviness, texture, and weight. Its robust construction not only adds a bold presence to any space but also highlights the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail that define Lucas Recchia's work. The Morfa n.10 is truly a striking centerpiece that invites interaction and admiration.

     

    The Arco Side Table, crafted in 2023 by Lucas Recchia, showcases a striking blend of polished and unpolished bronze. This unique piece reflects Recchia’s hands-on approach, from molding to the final patinas, creating a perfect balance between artistry and craftsmanship.

    In the Material Distortion mirror, Lucas Recchia combines elements in assemblages to create various pieces. Using just four ring shapes — two rounded and two rectangular — in either bronze or aluminum, different arrangements and growth directions give rise to unique pieces, all of which could potentially metamorphose into other typologies.

    In addition, our collection of objects and vases combines form and material in pieces that transcend functionality, infusing everyday spaces with artistic expression. These singular pieces add depth and character to any setting, subtly transforming spaces with their presence.
