Móveis de Madeira Pailar
About
Indústria de Móveis Pailar was founded in São Paulo in the 1960s by Luiz Laufer, who was also responsible for the company’s designs. The firm operated at Rua Raul Pompeia, 1,087, during a period of intense production and experimentation in Brazilian furniture design.
To date, this set of armchairs is the only piece from their collection that we have been able to catalogue. Despite the limited documentation available, it stands as a significant work. For many years, it was mistakenly attributed as a prototype of the Costela chair, designed in 1953 by Martin Eisler. Our research suggests that Pailar’s Lounge chair emerged after Eisler’s design and was likely inspired by the Costela.
Archival newspaper research revealed advertisements for Pailar between 1966 and 1975, indicating that the company’s production spanned from the late 1960s into the mid-1970s. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the Pailar chair was not produced in rosewood, but in Gonçalo Alves, a more accessible yet still noble Brazilian hardwood.
